Adele admits she was ‘putting off’ divorce from Simon Konecki ‘for years’ before split

Adele has candidly opened up on her divorce from Simon Konecki, admitting the split was "overdue".

The singer, 33, began dating charity CEO Simon, 47, in 2011. They then wed 2016 and Adele announced their split three years later in 2019.

Someone Like You hitmaker Adele, who is now dating Rich Paul, has rarely spoken of her divorce, which was finalised in March this year.

But now, following the release of her incredible new single Easy On Me, Adele has given fans a rare insight into her marriage and divorce.

Adele, who shares son Angelo with ex Simon, opened up to Heart Radio Breakfast's Jamie Theakston and Amanda Holden about her new single Easy On Me on Friday 15 October.

Host Jamie, 50, asked: "There will be a lot of people listening who have got things in their life that they're not too happy about, you did something about it. You made some big, life-changing decisions, how important was that to you?"

Singer Adele, who recently announced a special performance before her album drop, explained: "It was overdue. It was exhausting, it was really hard work but I was able to take the time that I needed, which isn't a given for everyone, I'm very aware of that."

Adele, who's video for her new song is steeped in hidden messages, added: "The more and more you put it off, the worse and worse it gets and I had been putting it off anyway for years before… now I am chilled as anything.

"So I'd say it's worth it, you know treading through all of that poo is worth it."

Heart Breakfast co-host Amanda then added: "You have to put on your waders don't you?" as Adele replied: "One hundred percent. Or you've just got to jump in head first."

Adele opened up about her new long-awaited album in a heartfelt Instagram post last week.

In the lengthy statement, she opened up about the making of the album. She penned: "I've learned a lot of blistering home truths about myself along the way.

"I've shed many layers but also wrapped myself in new ones. Discovered genuinely useful and wholesome mentalities to lead with and I feel like I've finally found my feeling again.

"I'd go as far as to say that I've never felt more peaceful in my life.

"And so, I'm ready to finally put this album out."

Adele previously revealed she wrote the new album to explain to her eight year old son Angelo why she and Simon divorced.

She explained the Vogue: "I wanted to explain to him, when he's in his twenties or thirties, who I am and why I voluntarily chose to dismantle his entire life in the pursuit of my own happiness.

"It made him really unhappy sometimes. And that's a real wound for me that I don't know if I'll ever be able to heal."
