Busy Philipps reveals 12-year-old child is gay and uses they/them pronouns

Busy Philipps’ 12-year-old child is gay and prefers they/them pronouns.

The 41-year-old is mum to Birdie Leigh, 12, and Cricket Pearl, seven, with husband Marc Silverstein.

On her podcast Busy Phillips Is Doing Her Best, Busy explained that her eldest child had asked her to use they/them pronouns for them, and came out as gay aged 10.

The Dawson’s Creek actress said: ‘Birdie told us at 10 years old and we immediately… I mean obviously, I knew that Birdie knew. We had conversations with close friends, very progressive friends, whose first reaction was “but is it real? Don’t you think that like, she’ll probably change her mind?”

‘I was always so blown away by that reaction, like are you f***ing kidding me? How do you not trust a kid to know who they are?’

Busy said that Birdie has crushes on Timothee Chalamet and Harry Styles, but explained it was nothing to do with their sexuality.

Saying she asked Birdie whether they had a crush on the Little Women star, she said: ‘Birdie goes: “Yeah, Mom. Of course I have a crush on T Chalamet but it’s not sexual, there’s no part of me that wants to make out with him. I have, like, an admiration… Things can exist and not have to do with my sexuality.”’

Busy then shared that she had been struggling with using they/them pronouns, but was working on it.

She said: ‘I said, Bird, I’ve been doing a bad job with the pronouns, because Birdie said that they would like their pronouns to be they/them, and I haven’t been doing it. I said because I have this public persona and I want Birdie to be in control of their own narrative and not have to answer to anybody outside of our friends and family if they don’t want to.

‘Then Bird was like, “I don’t give a f***”. You can talk about that I’m gay and out. You can talk about my pronouns. That would be cool with me. That’s great.” So I said, “OK, I can talk about it on the podcast.”’

Busy continued: ‘So Birdie, my out kid, prefers they/them. I f*** up sometimes, but I’m trying my best at that, too.’

Her co-host Shantira Jackson said that there are many parents who aren’t even trying, and told Busy that using the correct pronouns will ‘become second nature’ as she is ‘rewiring your brain’.

The Freaks and Greeks star added that she thinks people should get rid of pronouns ‘totally’, and that she believes that children and young people nowadays are able to share their truths earlier because they now have the information at hand.

Busy has been married to husband Marc since 2007, but the actress revealed in 2019 that she ‘played the divorce card’ after feeling like she had done everything in raising their children.

She told Harper’s Bazaar: ‘Marc was like, “I’ll do anything.” And I was like, “Okay, then do everything. Because I have done it all, all by myself, and I’m done, dude.”

‘I was fully out the door. I wasn’t expecting anything from him, but what we ended up doing was creating our own system.’

Marc then took over Birdie’s morning and bedtime routines, as well as making meals for the family throughout the week.
