Riverdale is the teen drama to end all others. The show is a reimagining of Archie Comics characters and has proved to be a huge hit across the world, shaking up the genre. The series taps into the zeitgeist of adolescence with its mixture of pop culture pastiche and intriguing, murder mystery storylines which are always played straight-faced and without too much irony by its cast.

Riverdale features the main characters from the comics including Archie Andrews (played by KJ Apa), Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart), Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) and Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse).

In the comics, Jughead is more of a peripheral character but he has been promoted to one of the so-called core four in the CW show.

Many fans are eager to know more about Sprouse and his twin brother Dylan, who rose to fame together.

The pair often shared roles when they were younger in films like Big Daddy, I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus and Apple Jack.

They also featured in Friends as Ben Gellar, the son of Ross (David Schwimmer).

Later, the pair played twins in various films and TV shows including The Emperor’s New School and That ’70s Show.

The duo went on to land their own Disney series in The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and its subsequent shows and TV movies.

Born identical twins on August 4, 1992, the two are celebrating their 28th birthday today (August 4).

Like in most teen shows, Cole is playing much older than his teen alter-ego who is either 17 or 18.

Cole is not the only one to be playing a younger character, his co-star Apa is 23, Reinhart is also 23 and Mendes is 26.

Out of his colleagues, Cole is playing a character nearly 10 years his junior, which is not unusual within the film and television industry when it comes to teenagers.

However, season five of Riverdale is expected to see a five-year time-jump which places the cast closer to the ages of the characters they play on the show.

On Riverdale season one, viewers saw Betty throwing Jughead a surprise birthday party much to his disdain and leading to an argument between the couple.

Riverdale has allowed Cole to leave behind his child star days and open him up to less saccharine projects with more nuance and complexity.

Speaking about graduating from his Disney roots, Cole told fans on an Ask Me Anything Reddit session in 2018: “I’d say the biggest challenge doesn’t come from you as an actor (as most actors are prepared to be versatile), it actually comes from the audience wanting their childhood to stay etched in stone.”

He went on to say: “I’ve had the privilege of being on a couple shows that have reached a rare level of success within the industry, and a longevity that many people grew up alongside.

“That process of growing up, and wanting the childhood to always remain nostalgic, can keep a lot of actors in the same place.”

Cole and Dylan briefly left the spotlight to attend college and explore a world outside Tinseltown.

Cole explained this career break, saying: “Public identity is a huge part of hiring potential, and it often takes a showrunner or casting director’s belief in an actor’s talent or appeal to look past that identity.

“I intentionally left entertainment for five years, and experienced life, grew up a bit, trained, got a haircut, went to college, and the audience grew with me. Very thankful for that.”

As well as his acting career, Cole also works a photographer and has been on a number of assignments for publications such as Paper Magazine and Elle USA.
