Whoopi Goldberg told viewers of the American TV show The View that she is currently using a walker to get around due to sciatica. The 65-year-old actress joked the condition was like a “bad boyfriend who came back to mess with me”.

In yesterday’s show, Whoopi said she was glad to be back on the programme before explaining the reason behind her absence.

The Sister Act star spoke of her sciatica, a term used to refer to pain or numbness along the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back to the bottom and leg.

Whoopi told fans that her walker had become her new best friend despite revealing that it “freaked” her out initially.

The movie star said she is now “gliding along” in her update.

“Yes, it’s me, I’m back,” Whoopi said during her TV return.

“I was out because I was dealing with something called sciatica, which is basically a bulging disc in your back and it impacts the sciatic nerve, which sends pain down your leg.

“I’m telling you, it’s like a bad boyfriend, a bad boyfriend, who came back to mess with me.”

“So there I was, trying to move my leg – impossible to do. It was really horrible, but I’m glad to be here,” she continued.

Holding up her walking device to camera, Whoopi continued: “I have a walker, which kind of freaks me out.

“I didn’t know that I needed it.”

After a co-star pointed out that she was looking well rested, the Ghost star said it was because she had been recuperating in a hospital bed.

In March 2019, the presenter was forced to take another break from the show after battling with pneumonia and sepsis.

During her return, she explained that she had been “gasping for air” before being sent to hospital.

Her doctor, who appeared on the show with her at the time, said the actress was having trouble breathing and her teeth were chattering during an initial phone conversation.

He admitted that he was worried that she wasn’t going to wake up.

Doctors later told her she had a 1 in 3 chance of dying.

Whoopi has been co-hosting The View since 2007.

She later won an Outstanding Talk Show Host Daytime Emmy Award, to add to her collection of accolades.

After finding fame in Steven Spielberg’s The Color Purple, she was awarded a prestigious Academy Award for her supportive role in 1990 movie Ghost.

Playing an eccentric psychic in the film also landed her a second Golden Globe.

The first for the 1985 hit that made her a household name.
