Maura Higgins pulls out of fashion awards last minute after dress was ‘too inappropriate’

She’s usually red-carpet ready, but Love Island star Maura Higgins has revealed that she pulled out of an appearance at the British Fashion Awards because she felt her outfit was “not very appropriate”.

This is despite the gown being custom-made for her by legendary designer and former Mulberry creative director, Scott Henshall.

The 47-year-old designer has been dubbed the “King Of the Red Carpet”, having dressed Karen Millen OBE, runway model Iris Law and Dame Kelly Holmes.

He’s also credited with making the world’s most expensive dress, a diamond-encrusted cobweb gown reportedly worth over £5 million and worn by Samantha Mumba for the premiere of Spider-Man 2 in 2004.

But this still didn’t live up to the high expectations of former Ann Summers model Maura.

Taking to Instagram, the 32 year old influencer explained to fans why she had not attended the event, which is the biggest night in British fashion.

Appearing on camera with her signature poker-straight hair, Maura stated that she was still in the hotel.

She said: “So guys, everyone is messaging me like, ;Where are ya and where are the red carpet pictures?; I've had a bit of a nightmare.”

Showing only a peak of the stunning silver gown, with it’s rippled fabric and knot detail, the model continued.

She added: “So obviously you can see I am fully ready. Glam team are on point as usual. Basically…. the dress, the shoes, everything wasn't something I'd wear…. I just feel it's not very appropriate for the Fashion Awards….”

Though Maura has worn a number of racy outfits to red-carpet events, including the National Television Awards, she still was unsure about the gown.

Perhaps this was due to the backlash she recently received for wearing a bejewelled bra-less dress to the Pride Of Britain awards, which also featured a daring side split.

The reality star even alluded to this, saying: “I obviously do like to go daring, you guys know that, but I just feel, I don't know. It's just not right. So yeah, I've decided not to go. I'm still in the hotel as you can see.”

She also claimed that she’d had little creative control over the outfit, despite stating that she’d been excited about the surprise earlier that day.

In an Instagram story earlier that day, Maura had posed in her hotel room and beamed as she held up a piece sign before getting ready for the event.

The accompanying caption read: “BFA tonight… first time to have zero control on my outfit… excited to see what @scott_henshall has designed for me.”

She was understandably excited given Scott’s credentials, having been the youngest designer ever to show at London Fashion Week at the tender age of just 22 back in in 1996.

But despite his credentials and the beautiful gown, Maura still wasn’t satisfied.

We guess you really can’t please everyone all of the time, right Maura?
