Meghan Markle is opening up about the comment she made last year about not being “okay.”
The 39-year-old Duchess of Sussex gave an interview with ITV journalist Tom Bradby last year while on a tour of Africa with husband Prince Harry.
During the interview, Meghan was asked how she’s doing as a new mom and she said, “Thank you for asking because not many people have asked if I’m okay, but it’s a very real thing to be going through behind the scenes.”
Bradby asked if it’s “fair” to say she’s “not really okay, as in it’s really been a struggle?” In response to that, Meghan said, “Yes.”
Now, Meghan is speaking out while appearing on the Teenager Therapy podcast with Harry.
“I was tired,” she said of that ITV interview. “I was just about to give Archie a bath. I was exhausted.”
Harry said, “She was still breastfeeding at the time.” Meghan then added that while on her tour of Africa, “between every official engagement I was running back to make sure our son was fed.”
“I didn’t think about that answer. I just answered honestly,” she said. “I was in a moment of vulnerability, because I was tired, because there was no presentation. It was just, here’s where I am: I’m a mom with a four-and-a-half month-old baby and we are tired. But I think the reason it resonated with people is because everyone wants to be asked if they’re okay.”
Now, Meghan says, “a year later I would say yes, I am doing well.”
