They have both had their share of steamy sex scenes on screen… so it is little surprise that Normal People’s Paul Mescal has turned to Fifty Shades bondage hunk Jamie Dornan for tips on handling fame.
Paul revealed to Guilty Pleasures that there is a network of A-listers who break in newbies.
‘I’ve been really lucky, Jamie for one has been an absolute legend in terms of reaching out, being so generous with what he knows,’ said the 25-year-old actor as he launched an initiative called Samsung Spotlight.
He added: ‘There’s a network of people who have been there that have gone, “It’s all good, you are doing good. Keep going”.
‘Nobody is telling you, “This is what you should do”, because fame is a very personal experience.’
After he and 22-year-old Daisy Edgar-Jones, who played Marianne, starred in the year’s most streamed show, Paul doesn’t want his enjoyment of overnight fame to go cold.
‘It evolves, loads of different stages,’ he said. ‘It’s not supposed to be one fixed thing. The show exploded. Myself and Daisy went with that.’
Pointing out that 2020 was ‘mentally taxing’ for everyone, he went on: ‘Then you throw the show on top of that, it was an extraordinary time.’
With fans swooning over everything from his silver chain to his running shorts, Paul is wary of how visible he will be. ‘I’m still figuring out how best I want to live my life,’ he said. ‘I am trying to stay on a level keel and not to get too cold with it.’
Even if he doesn’t scale the same heights as Jamie, 38, he is happy to rest on his laurels as Normal People’s Connell.
‘I will always be very proud of that show and who Connell and Marianne are,’ said Paul, who is rumoured to be dating US singer Phoebe Bridgers.
‘If it all crashes and burns, I will have him and be very grateful of that job.’
After dancing in a Rolling Stones video, Paul is back on his feet for a new short film called Lockdown.
He shot it on ultra-high definition 8K on the Samsung Galaxy S20 smartphone, and has invited others to record 90-second films to showcase their talents.
‘This is an opportunity for young creatives to do the thing they haven’t been able to do since the pandemic began,’ Paul said.
■ #SamsungSpotlight champions arts creatives who have been affected by Covid-19. To enter, record a performance of up to 90 seconds and submit it to #SamsungSpotlight to be in with a chance to star in a new Samsung digital ad campaign. Entries are open to those aged 16+.
Bristle cheer you up! Haz ’tache back
It was Mo! Mo! Mo! from Harry Styles when he grew back his ’tache to cheer up fans and ring in Christmas.
Hazza led a fine cast of British talent — including Dua Lipa and Sam Smith — who beamed in for America’s iHeart Radio Jingle Ball on Monday.
Strumming his guitar in the open air, Harry played three tracks from his album Fine Line as an antidote to the hellish year of Covid-19.
‘I just want to say happy holidays to everyone at home,’ said the 26-year-old Watermelon Sugar singer, adding: ‘I hope you’ve been staying safe, managed to make the best out of a rough year.’
US favourite Billie Eilish revealed what is on her Christmas list. ‘I used to love the Holiday Barbie, which is a once a year, very specific, rare Barbie,’ said the 18-year-old. ‘If I got a Holiday Barbie I’d be excited.’
Jesy’s the best says Love Island ex Chris
Jesy Nelson’s former lover Chris Hughes has rallied round following her departure from Little Mix this week.
The Love Island star called Jesy ‘the best’ as he reacted to her exit statement, in which she confessed the pressures of girl band life had become too much.
The exes had discussed marriage and 27-year-old Chris’s fertility worries before they broke up in the spring. He also appeared on Jesy’s documentary Odd One Out, about the hell she has faced from trolls.
The 29-year-old singer has since moved on to her current boyfriend, Our Girl actor Sean Sagar.
Jesy has quit Little Mix ‘with a heavy heart’ to ‘spend time with the people I love’. She immediately unfollowed the group’s manager Samantha Cox after issuing the statement.
Hidden gem? Not Dakota’s bling ring
After getting tied up in Fifty Shades, Dakota Johnson could soon be tying the knot with Coldplay’s Chris Martin.
The 31-year-old did nothing to dispel rumours that he has popped the question when she flashed an emerald dazzler on her engagement finger while shopping in Hollywood. It looks as though she and Chris, 43, are poised to cement their romance following a brief split last year.
The Coldplay frontman’s ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow has given Dakota her seal of approval, gushing: ‘I love her. I can see how it would seem weird because it’s sort of unconventional.’
Leg taunts don’t sit well with Shawn
Shawn Mendes says he has weathered slights about his sexuality ever since he was a teenager, when he was taunted for sitting with his legs crossed.
The 22-year-old singer, who dates Camila Cabello, also revealed he was bullied over the pitch of his voice.
‘Everyone’s been calling me gay since I was 15 years old,’ he spilled. ‘I had problems with the way my voice sounded.
‘I’m like, “How do I sit?” I cross my legs and sit with a position of this feminine style and I really suffered with that s***.
‘You want to say, “There’s nothing wrong with being gay, but I’m not”. You don’t know how to respond.’
