When speaking about collections, R13’s Chris Leba refers to his commitment to consistency. Over the years, the designer has churned out fashions with attitude — drop-waist, slouchy and twisted jeans; punky graphic Ts; flannels and wallpaper floral baby-doll dresses; mile-high, chunky boots and sneakers, to name a few. For fall, Leba continued these ideas, infused with a grunge attitude, alongside new takes on pre-fall’s interpretation of the quarantine uniform. Leba called it, “the yin and yang of beautiful and cozy.”

The look: “COVID Grunge,” where a nonconformist attitude meets comfort. Additionally, R13’s consistently cool girl gets a play on proportions.

Quote of note: “Every season: say the same thing, but do it in a way that’s somewhat unexpected so people don’t see the same thing again, but without losing the brand messaging.”

Standout pieces: Signature flannels evolved into Leba’s silhouette of the season, the long skirt, paired with graphic T-shirts and double laced-up sneakers and cozier cotton, cashmere and double-layer distressed knits. Outerwear — one of Leba’s favorite categories to design: the brand’s signature robe converted into a sleeping bag-esque padded leopard smoking coat, faux-fur jackets (shrunken, elongated; monochromatic and animal print), oversized, sturdy leather jackets, reversible puffers and more.

The takeaway: Leba’s knack for turning classic pieces and everyday ideas into fresh designs (a grunged-up “New York City” T-shirt or shoelaces reworked as corsetry on the crotch of jeans) worked once again for fall. His “off-kilter” pairings — graphic knits with graphic printed leggings, a shrunken floral cardigan and graphic handscript “F—ker” T-shirt with tartan plaid maxi skirt — and the juxtaposition of prints and motifs — buffalo checks, tartan plaid, animal prints, graffiti, florals and Sonic Youth graphics — made the collection a success.
