Éterne Makes Elevated Essentials You’ll Want to Live In

Stylist Chloe Bartoli is rediscovering the clothes she’d packed away in storage during her recent pregnancy and renovation to her California home. The process has only reaffirmed what many of us learned over the past 18-odd months: Once you dress for ease above all, it’s hard to go back.

“As I was putting on a pair of jeans the other day—my tight, high-waisted Levi’s—I was like ‘Oh, this is not comfortable,’” she tells BAZAAR.com. “We’ve just gotten so used to being so comfortable for so long.”

But Bartoli’s approach to keeping comfort elevated comes from her own designs. Last year, the stylist and her business partner Adam Bernhard opened Éterne, a range of affordable basics in luxuriously soft fabrics.

Éterne’s pieces have all the fundamentals of true essentials. Bodysuits, t-shirts, and lounge pants are made with a cozy, yet breathable cotton and modal blend. Every item comes in minimalist hues of heather gray, white, and black meant for endless layering or wearing alone.

In the short year since its debut, Éterne’s elevated basics have made their way into the wardrobes of several modern style icons. Sightings range from Hailey Bieber layering an Éterne tank under a YSL suit to Kaia Gerber wearing an Éterne crop top with trousers.

Éterne was inspired by Bartoli’s struggle to find essentials for styling high profile women—a challenge that started when she began her career at 17. “I would go and buy Hanes t-shirts and kind of cut them up and work with them, or I [would pull] super expensive t-shirts that was five-hundred plus,” she says. “There wasn’t really a place in the market for a reasonably priced t-shirt that looked good and felt good, ever.”

Reasonably priced t-shirts are one of several items that Bartoli has perfected with Éterne. Just ask her clients: Already, Bartoli says most of Éterne’s customers are serial repeat shoppers, snapping up several boyfriend thermals or cropped tanks on each visit to the site. Bartoli’s theory? “I think people are really kind of purchasing Éterne pieces as their everyday staples.”

By staples, she doesn’t mean just another loungewear uniform. “I’m all about comfort and being able to wear them out as much as they’re worn in the house,” she says. When Bartoli dresses up, she’ll often layer a cropped Éterne turtleneck or tank with a pantsuit and her favorite Bottega Veneta combat boots. Recently, she’s noticed women wearing the brand’s new lounge pants with puffer jackets and leather trenches for fall.

The thrill of seeing “her girls,” styling clients like Kaia Gerber and Emily Ratajkowski, hasn’t worn off for Bartoli yet. “They’re so beautiful that they’re always going to look good, but I’m relieved to see that they wear it almost every day, really, with their looks,” she laughs. But Bartoli is most excited when her friends text her pictures wearing head-to-toe Éterne.

Bodysuits and thermal tees are only the start for Éterne. Bartoli has bigger ambitions for her label, ones that tackle another hard to define, harder to shop catch-all in fashion: “great classics.”

Bartoli says Éterne’s next expansions will arrive later this year or early next. “I feel like right now is just the beginning of the brand,” she says, “and I’m going to grow it to be all of the pieces I love to wear on a day-to-day.”
