The sweet and sour treat topped a survey of 2,000 adults, having been picked by 29 percent.
Indulgent chocolate fudge cake was the runner-up with 28 percent and a classicVictoria sponge, chosen by 27 percent, came third.
Carrot cake ended up fourth as the chocolate brownie completed “the great de-bake” top five.
Research found three in 10 very devoted fans rated devouring a cake even better than sex, while more than half, 56 percent, are more likely to demolish a slice than do exercise.
Ian Straughan of The Big Cake Co, which commissioned the research, said: “Cake makes us feel happy and special. It sees us through the best times and cheers us up when we feel down – no wonder we love it.And it comes out on our most important days.”
Cake connoisseurs said they most enjoyed their treat with a cup of tea, according to the OnePoll.com figures.

And just under six out of 10 (58 percent) reckoned there isn’t much in life that can’t be sorted by tucking into a slice.
Two-thirds of respondents said they buy cake as a treat for themselves and 61 percent for a birthday or other occasion.
While nearly a third (32 percent) would buy one to show someone else how much they care.
The poll marks the launch of the cake firm’s delivery partnership with Just Eat. It also recruited sand artist Simon Beck to create Britain’s biggest cakes on two of the nation’s most-famous beaches.
The artist worked for 10 hours over two days with a rake and a compass at Whitby, North Yorks, and Blackpool, Lancs. Each sand giant measured 60 metres across.
And if devotees were asked to vote for their favourite bake in human form, then surely a slice of Attenborough cake would command the greatest respect of all…
