Tomatoes can be the perfect addition to a sauce, salad or sandwich, so it’s a pity when they aren’t as juicy as we might like. Bon Appetit shared a simple way to improve the flavours of this fruit.
According to Bon Appetit, tomato fans should mix their fruit with a dash of pineapple juice.
The website stated: “Tossing raw tomatoes with pineapple juice mimics the acidity and sweetness of a fresh, ripe tomato.
“Add the juice only a tablespoon at a time, tasting to make sure you’re not eating a pina colada.”
But what if you want to ripen your tomatoes for real, rather than just make them taste ripe?
Ren Patel, an Indian cooking expert, took to YouTube channel Scoff to explain how to ripen tomatoes quickly at home.
She explained that ideally, people should buy their tomatoes from the supermarket already ripe.
However, if they are still a little acidic and unripe, Ren shared exactly what to do.
She stated: “Firstly, make sure they’re not in the fridge. My top tip would be to leave them preferably in the sun if you can.”
Failing this, tomatoes should be kept somewhere warm in the kitchen where the sun can touch them, according to the expert.
Ren told viewers that if they don’t have a place that has access to the sun – or better yet, direct sunlight – they’ll have to be left out for a few days to ripen naturally.
This may be the case, particularly during the cold, winter months, suggested Ren.
She reiterated that they should be kept at room temperature, rather than in the fridge.
Gregory Lofts, deputy food editor at Martha Stewart Living, revealed why.
Tomatoes contain an enzyme that reacts to cold temperatures, which causes its cell membrane to break down.
The sad result is a piece of fruit that’s tasteless and bland.
He stated: “You’re essentially zapping flavour and texture from a tomato when you refrigerate it.”
Ren concluded with some final tomato ripening tips: “If you’re purchasing tomatoes that are still on the vine, try not to take them off the vine because they’ll carry on developing when you’re at home.
She dispelled a popular myth: “Don’t put them in the fridge. We’re very keen to put them in the fridge as soon as we buy them.”
Instead, leaving them with the rest of your fruit bowl will allow them to ripen with the rest of the fruit.
Lastly, smaller, cherry-sized tomatoes are going to ripen quicker than large ones.
