This legendary bedtime tipple will serenade your synapses and have you softly snoozing before you can mutter “Turn the lights out”. Warm milk has always had an infantile effect on me.
Grounded in Ayurvedic tradition, golden milk gets its psychedelic kapow from fresh turmeric. We like turmeric for its superhero powers, as hinted by its blinding radiance.
Here’s the story. Inside that godly glow hides a curious compound called curcumin. This rich store of curcumin has excited the medical community for its ability to help reduce inflammation in the body. It does this by interrupting and distracting the production of odious leukotrienes (aka pesky little fire-starters).
Good news for angry skin conditions, aches, pains, and chronic joint injuries. In fact, so many conditions ending in ‘-itis’ relate to inflammation in the body, and could benefit from a good frolic with turmeric. Now there’s a resolution I can keep! Here’s a recipe to get us started.

These measurements aren’t terribly official – it’s really up to you and the strength of your palate. Feel free to add as much or as little ginger, black pepper and turmeric as you like. Then store your fresh ginger and turmeric root in a freezer bag until the mood for golden milk yodels again. This way, you’ll always have a ready supply. Hallowed be the freezer.
Bedtime golden milk
You will need:
500ml almond milk or your preferred type of milk
½ teaspoon freshly grated ginger root
½ teaspoon freshly grated turmeric root
A few twists of the black pepper mill
Raw honey, to taste
1 Pour the almond milk or whichever milk you are using into a small saucepan. Grate the fresh ginger root and the fresh turmeric root into the milk – peeling the ginger and the turmeric is optional. (I like to lather my fingers in olive oil to help prevent any yellow staining from the fresh turmeric. Otherwise your digits might look like little Minions for the day.)
2 Gently warm – don’t boil! – the milk for 5-8 minutes until it slowly turns a deeper colour.
3 Strain the golden milk through a fine sieve to catch any fibrous bits. What’s left is smooth, warm and deliciously perfumed. Add some freshly ground black pepper and raw honey to taste. Sip yourself into a soft lullaby (or a shamanistic frenzy – it’s damn good!)
