Burgers are a traditional American staple, so the thought of the Queen of England enjoying one is unimaginable to many. However, former royal chef Darren McGrady has revealed Queen Elizabeth does in fact enjoy eating a burger from time to time. Darren, who worked at Buckingham Palace from 1982 until 1993, said the catch is she prefers eating burgers without buns, and with a knife and fork.
The former royal chef also revealed to Insider Magazine the Queen selects cranberries as her go-to condiment with burgers, as opposed to the more commonly accepted Tomato Ketchup.
Due to this recent revelation, Foodhub has created a ‘Ma’amburger’ to emulate the Queen’s desired fillings and condiments, in time for National Burger Day on 27 August.
The ‘Ma’amburger’ consists of two beef patties, cranberry sauce and salad.
Ardian Mula, CEO of Foodhub, said: “With it being National Burger Day, we had to do something special to celebrate everyone’s favourite tasty treat.
“We know the public love tasting new burgers, so we thought we’d introduce them to one of the Queen’s favourite snacks – which we’ve called the Ma’amburger.
“We’re used to seeing unique food pairings, so we’re always looking out for the next innovation.
“Once we found out Queen Elizabeth loved a burger with no bun and smothered in cranberry sauce, we knew we had to recreate it and offer our customers the chance to live like royalty for the day.”
Darren McGrady has often spoken about the Queen’s love for venison, and even enjoys her burgers to be made from venison.
Ardian continued: “We know the Queen often has her burgers made from venison.
“We made the decision not to use venison in our Ma’amburger because we are making this burger available to the masses and venison is not as readily available as beef and is also such an acquired taste.
“However, we have added in an extra patty to make up for the missing bun, so Brits can give their tastebuds a royal treat, without going hungry!
“As for the Queen, we’re sure she’ll be happy to see her unique culinary creation being enjoyed by customers nationwide.”
Darren McGrady baffled royal fans when he admitted the Queen never ate pizza.
He said during an interview with Insider Magazine that the popular dish was never on the menu during his time in the royal kitchen.
Darren told Insider: “Eleven years at the palace and we never served pizza at all, not even at receptions.
“The menus at Buckingham Palace are very traditional French, which wouldn’t lean towards having pizza on it.
“Her Majesty’s Victorian upbringing dictates that the only thing you would pick up and eat with your fingers is afternoon tea.”
The Queen tends to avoid most fast food, and if she were to ever request takeaway-style food, Darren says the royal chefs would make their own version.
Queen Elizabeth only makes an exception for burgers, so long as they are served without a bun.
Darren continued: “It always tickled me at Balmoral, we would make our own burgers.
“They would shoot deer, and we would do venison burgers. There’d be gorgeous cranberry and everything stuffed into them, but we never set buns out.
“They would have burgers, but not the buns. So they would eat it with their knife and fork.”
