It must be the time of year but we’re very much on a drinks and fine foods tip at the moment.
Whether that’s joining the Metro Wine Club so we can have decent stuff in the cupboard, bagging our 50% off at bakers The Proof, or heading to Queen Of The Slopes in Shoreditch for the full après-ski experience.
And we might even fit a bit of World Cup footy action in while we’re at it.
Here are the best events happening in London this week…
Time for a kick-off
If you do have to watch the World Cup – and we think you do – then there are better places to do it than on that sofa or down the local.
Take Vinegar Yard, they’ll be showing all the matches on their big screens out on their covered and heated winter terrace (who’s idea was it to do this in winter, by the way? Oh, FIFA), with beer on tap and food stands.
At Hackney Bridge, they’ve set up a Soccer Lounge especially for England games while in the swanky Double Standard at the genius Standard in King’s Cross you can feel like you’re on a cool night out and there just happens to be a World Cup on.
Join the Metro Wine Club
Now plenty of us like wine, but you don’t always know which grapes you like the most, right? Well, with the launch of the Metro Wine Club, you get to be on the inside track, not only as far as quality is concerned, but also when it comes to price!
None of your supermarket fodder, these are unique hand-crafted wines from independent wine makers and you can get your hands on them for just £4.99 a bottle! And no lugging it back from the shops either with free delivery.
Malbecs, Chenins (or choose all-white or all-red) plus a free bottle of Italian bubbly for just £59.88 a case. This fantastic selection also acts as the perfect introduction to Virgin Wines WineBank service.
No contract, no fees, plenty of wines. Win win. We can’t wait to sign up. T&CS apply.
Join online for just £4.99 a bottle with free delivery!
A gig? From a top up-and-comer? For free? Where do we sign? We’re talking about Holly Humberstone, who you’ll know from having won the 2022 Brit Rising Star Award, her gigs with Olivia Rodrigo and her appearance at Glasto.
You’ll also soon know her from her first ever headline tour. But you can get a slice of Holly (totes appropes for Christmas!) at a free gig she’ll be doing at House of Vans London on December 8.
All you have to do is enter the ballot for tickets, which opens at noon on November 29. And if you aren’t one of the lucky ones, you could always watch the live stream on the Vans Europe Twitch channel.
The Arches, 228-232 Station Approach Rd, SE1
We’ve been expecting you, Mr Holmes
You may have got through the award-winning live escape experience of Sherlock, you know, off the telly, but do you think you’ll have the same luck when faced with the dreaded Moriarty, nemesis of Mr. Holmes?
From the same creators, The Mind of Moriarty lets you into the world of the notorious criminal mastermind so that you can defeat him using a combination of virtual reality, digital media and theatrical sets. Magnifying glasses not required.
It lasts for 100 minutes but time is of the essence as you travel through iconic scenes from the BBC show to solve the riddle – and save the world! A nice Christmas present you can join in on… Moriarty has nothing on our deviousness.
Tickets from November 30 for £35
Queens and country
This is just one of the attractions down at Phantom Peak, which will transform itself into Phantom Peak Fanzone between November 25 and 29.
All the usual fantasy gaming that Phantom Peak specialises in has been rolled back to make way for an experience that champions inclusivity at every turn.
Big screens, delicious street food, half-time drag queens, a complimentary drink. If you want to do it in public and can’t face the rowdiness of a pub, this is your spot.
November 25-29, Surrey Quays Road, SE16
Fancy 50% off the cost of some very fancy cakes and desserts? Is the Pope a big fan of white and jewellery? Of course, you do. And to celebrate dessert specialist The Proof opening its first stand-alone bakery in Dalston, they are offering 50% discount on all food until Friday.
They are also giving away 500 of their signature profiteroles this Saturday. All those carbs and calories without biting into quite so much of your Christmas present money. And it’s not just cakes: you can also get avo on toast, sausage rolls and a savoury profiterole sandwich, of all things.
Dalston Square, E8
Taste of the Alps
Skiing has always been pricey, and in this cost-of-living crisis we were thinking we may have to forgo the best bit of skiing, the après, but no. Thanks to Queen of Hoxton, it’s game on for roaring fire pits to toast marshmallows, warming beverages, cocktails, schnitzel, alpine steak burgers, bratwurst vegan hot dogs, the works.
All of this is going down on the roof under their iconic wigwam done out in proper chalet style with cowhides and ginghams and ski boots. All that’s missing is those depressingly slushy streets, the biting cold and shoes you can’t walk in… though we’re sure you have a few pairs of those.
From 4pm-9pm, Wednesday to Friday, 1 Curtain Road, EC2
