Onion rings can be a delicious treat, but making them at home usually means you have to use a deep fat fryer to get the batter crispy.
Cherie Tu, from Sydney, Australia, has revealed her recipe for making them without the device – and she says it’s really easy.
The foodie adds that the key is to keep two layers together to create a thicker ring.
In the recipe, created for Australian Onions, she adds plain flour, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, turmeric and chilli powder to soy milk, then dips the onions and coats in panko bread crumbs, salt and pepper to create the coating.
Once everything is coated, she says the air fryer is the best method to get it super crispy but you can use a conventional oven if you don’t have an air fryer.
Cherie follows a vegan diet so the recipe doesn’t contain any eggs or dairy.
2 brown onions
2/3 cup plain flour
3/4 cup unsweetened soy milk
1/2 tsp smoked paprika
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
1/2 tsp garlic powder
Pinch of turmeric, for colour (optional)
Salt & freshly cracked black pepper
1 cup panko bread crumbs
1/2 tsp chilli powder
1. Cut the ends off the onions, peel and slice into 1cm thick rings. Separate the layers to create your rings. I prefer to keep two layers together for a thicker onion ring.
2. In one bowl, combine all the wet mix ingredients and whisk well. In another bowl, combine the dry mix ingredients.
3. Dip each ring into the wet mix, followed by the dry mix.
4. Transfer into the air fryer basket, ensuring not to overlap them. Lightly spray with oil and air fry each batch for 10 minutes or until golden and crispy.
For the oven method, place the battered onion rings straight onto a lined baking tray, ensuring they are spaced out and not overlapping one another. Then give them a generous spray with oil before baking in a 220C preheated oven for 20 minutes or until golden and crispy.
