A 33-year-old New York nurse was killed on Tuesday evening after she was struck by a snowplow, according to authorities.
The Glens Falls Police announced in a press release that Kristen L. Stevenson died from her injuries after being hit by the plow in a rear area of Glens Falls Hospital.
Stevenson, of Queensbury, worked at the hospital as a cardiac catheterization nurse, hospital spokesman Ray Agnew confirms to PEOPLE.
"The Glens Falls Hospital Community is heartbroken at the loss of one of our nursing staff, cardiac catheterization nurse Kristen Stevenson," Agnew says. "Kristen was 33 years old and had worked at the hospital since May of 2011."
"Our hearts and prayers go out to her family, friends and colleagues," Agnew adds. "She was a light and will be dearly missed."
According to police, the fatal incident unfolded just after 5 p.m.
A preliminary investigation determined that Stevenson "unknowingly walked behind the plow truck as it was backing up" before she was struck by the plow, which was allegedly operated by Roger E. Maher, 59 — also an employee at the hospital.
First responders rushed to the scene and provided first aid to Stevenson, but it was sadly too late as she "ultimately succumbed to her injuries," police said.
At this time, the accident remains under investigation by the Glens Falls Police Department and the Warren County Sheriff's Office Traffic Reconstruction Unit. No charges have been filed.
Stevenson leaves behind her 13-year-old son, her sister Heather Richardson — who is also a nurse in the Wound Healing Center at Glens Falls Hospital — her father, aunt, significant other, and her son's father, according to Agnew.
