Boris Johnson’s tier system is in place from today, with residents of Tiers 2 and 3 facing new restrictions. Pubs and restaurants have been forced to close in Tier 3 and are acting under a curfew in Tiers 1 and 2. But what about hairdressers, are hairdressers closing in higher tiers too?

What is the tier system?

The‌ ‌new‌ ‌three-tier‌ ‌system‌ ‌of‌ ‌local‌ ‌lockdowns‌ ‌categorises‌ ‌different‌ ‌areas‌ ‌in‌ ‌the‌ ‌UK‌ ‌as‌ ‌either‌ ‌medium‌ ‌risk,‌ ‌high‌ ‌risk,‌ ‌or‌ ‌very‌ ‌high‌ ‌risk.

Medium risk is Tier 1, high risk is Tier 2, and very high risk is Tier 3.

Most‌ ‌of‌ the UK‌ is in Tiers 1 and 2, and the rules differ from tier to tier.

The rules are the same in Tier 1, with the 10pm curfew in bars, pubs and restaurants in place and the rule of six still in play.

But what are the rules in Tier 2? Can hairdressers open in Tier 2?

Tier 2 rules

People living in Tier 2 can no longer meet up with people from other households indoors.

A group of six or fewer people from two different households are allowed to meet in private gardens.

The 10pm curfew on bars, pubs, and restaurants is still in place in Tier 2.

Schools, universities and places of worship may remain open, and weddings and funerals can go ahead with fewer people.

You can still go to the gym in Tier 2, as long as the gym has made it possible to avoid mixing with people they don’t live with.

If not, exercise classes and organised sport will have to take place outside.

Social distancing rules are still in place and people are advised to avoid busy times on public transport if possible.

But what do the rules say about other businesses such as hairdressers in Tier 2?

Can hairdressers open in tier 2?

Hairdressers can stay open in Tier 2, in salons and mobile businesses.

The rules state that businesses and venues can continue to operate as long as they do so in a COVID-secure manner.

Of course this excludes those that are closed by law such as nightclubs.

Mobile hairdressers and beauty businesses in all tiers can continue to work, as long as they follow the guidelines.

In Tier 3 areas, which are considered high risk, salons and barbershops may be told to close.

Local authorities are being consulted by the government about adding additional restrictions to drive down transmission of the virus.

This could involve closing personal care and close contact services or prohibiting the highest-risk activities.

That means salons could be asked to close in Tier 3 or they may be asked to stop offering the highest-risk activities such as eyebrow waxing, eyelash extensions, and facials.
