One-year-old stray cat Abigail was often seen strolling around Wembley with another cat by her side.
She and the male cat were clearly closely bonded, spending loads of their time together and looking to each other for comfort as they navigated the mean streets without care.
Then tragedy struck. Abigail’s best friend was hit by a car and killed.
But in the cat’s final moments, Abigail stayed right by his side.
A member of the public noticed a male cat lying very still in the road near her house, with another cat sitting by his side. On closer inspection, she realised the male cat had been hit by a car that had then driven off.
Abigail refused to leave the cat’s side, and stayed right by his body while someone called Mayhew Animal Home for help.
When animal welfare officer Tania Mazzoni arrived, she found Abigail still there, refusing to abandon her closest companion. Tania had to bring both cats back to the centre.
Thankfully Abigail was found to be free of injuries and was perfectly healthy, apart from being scared and shaken by the ordeal.
Staff at Mayhew helped her settle in at the cattery. Abigail didn’t have a microchip and no one came to collect her, but she appeared to have been domesticated as she was tame and loving to humans.
It wasn’t long before someone fell in love with Abigail and wanted to give her the loving home she deserved.
Sweet Abigail has now moved to her forever home, where she’ll be showered with plenty of love and affection after her loss.
Her new owner says it took a while for Abigail to come out of her shell and accept the loss of her friend, but she’s slowly settled in and has made bonds with her new human pals.
