Prunes have been frequently lauded for their laxative effects – and for good reason. Prune juice is effective at relieving constipation because it contains a high amount of fibre – and fibre is absolutely essential for helping you pass comfortably.

An average-sized glass of prune juice contains about 2/6 grams of fibre.

This is about 10 percent of your daily requirement.

However, prune juice also contains a type of sugar alcohol called sorbitol.

This helps you pass more easily as it draws water into the intestine, spurring on bowel movements.

Prunes contain double the amount of sorbitol than prune juice – some 14g of the stuff.

A serving of ten prunes will give your body 7.1 grams of fibre, which is more than a quarter of your daily recommended intake.

One 2011 study suggests prunes should be considered the first-line approach to dealing with mild to moderate constipation.

Another study showed that prunes made improvements in both stool frequency and consistency, compared with participants treated with psyllium fibre supplements.

Prunes have a lot of health benefits, so incorporating them into your diet even if you’re not constipated can help improve your overall health.

Regularly eating prunes has been linked with reducing a person’s risk of developing colon cancer.

Compounds found in prunes can also act as antibacterial agents, helping to clear up your gastrointestinal tracts.

Prunes have also been found to increase a persons feeling of fullness, meaning overall food intake is reduced, helping control weight gain and obesity.

Prunes have been linked with other health benefits such as lowering the risk of diabetes, protecting against cardiovascular disease, and preserving the strength of your bones.

There are no guidelines on how much prune juice you should consume if you’re suffering from constipation.

However, begin your intake with a small amount, slowly building up until you begin to feel a difference in your bowel movements.
