Similar to lasagne, the dish was first posted by Miami-based food influencer Valentina Mussi, who goes by @sweetportfolio online. Her video racked up more than 350,000 likes on Instagram, with many saying they can’t wait to make the dish.

Thousands of users have now whipped it up, by pouring a tomato base to the bottom of a cake tin before lining up a tubular pasta – such as rigatoni or penne – and then adding mince and a cheese such as cheddar or mozzarella.

Since, it’s also gone viral on TikTok, with #pastacake picking up more than 1.2million views, and further 3,000 on Instagram.

And while many have said they can’t wait to make the dish and have whipped up their own creations to share online, some pasta aficionados have warned against it, saying it’s the furthest thing from authentic.

One comment on the TikTok video wrote: ‘My Nonna called me and she wants me to tell you, she’s mad at you,’

Another wrote: ‘This looks disgusting, but I’ve seen worse’.

Others have made their own version of the dish, combining other viral recipes including feta pasta. While some have added mince, chicken, tomato and onion, with one user saying they made it as an alternative for their best friend who doesn’t like birthday cake.

Some have kept the recipe simple, using tinned tomatoes or puree, while others have diced onions, chilli, carrots, and peppers and fried it in a tomato sauce before mixing it in with mince.
