Of all the terrible 90s and 00s trends we’ve seen make a return this year (lowrise jeans, we’re looking at you), baby braids aren’t one we immediately want to see vanish from social media. These cute mini braids, usually placed around the front sections of hair, have found themselves at the centre of a new celebrity hair trend.
The fashionable likes of Hailey Bieber and Bridgerton’s Simone Ashley have been pioneering the micro braid trend in recent months, causing the look to become very popular on social media. The good news is that they work on all hair textures, so it’s a trend that can be worn by anyone. All you need is a bit of dexterity and some small, clear hair ties.

For Coachella, model Hailey Bieber wowed with a braided hair look, lilac eye makeup and seriously glowy skin.
Hailey chose to wear two braids in the front sections of her hair, and added a further two towards her midsections. Steal her style by giving your hair some loose, beachy waves – the perfect look for festival season.
We’re assuming that most people will have fallen in love with Bridgerton’s Simone Ashley after binge-watching season two of the Netflix series. Though she wears some intricate updos on the show, Simone is much more relaxed with her beauty look in real life.
A personal favourite look of ours is Simone’s textured, beachy hair paired with two baby braids. We wonder if Hailey and the actress have been sharing style notes!
While we can’t say for sure that Wolf of Wall Street’s Margot Robbie started (or restarted) the baby braid trend, we loved her look when she wore them in 2019. Her front section braids actually resemble small twists, but the effect is similar.
Paired with sleek tresses and a full face of Chanel makeup, Margot showed how to make this trend very grown-up and chic.
Rihanna isn’t a braid novice, and the singer can often be seen wearing her dark hair in long braids or locs. For a new ad celebrating her Fenty brand’s launch on Ulta, RiRi gave baby braids a go in the front sections of her hair.
Unlike the other celebs, she decided to throw the rest of her hair up into a high bun, allowing just the braids to fall loose around her face. Very effective.
Model Bella Hadid is another regular braid wearer, often choosing them for festivals and off-duty looks. Our favourite example of her pioneering the baby braid trend is from March 2020 when she teamed the 00s style with baby blue eyeshadow. The result is very Powerpuff Girls meets the modern TikTok generation.
