I’m losing my wife to early dementia at 57 and it is breaking my heart | The Sun

DEAR DEIDRE: I’M LOSING MY WIFE TO EARLY DEMENTIA

MY wife is living with early onset dementia and it’s breaking my heart.

I’m 61 and she is 57. She was diagnosed with it last year.

She now doesn’t understand a single word I say.

She can’t read any more and all the joy has gone from her life.

She watches kids’ cartoons but just stares at the screen. I don’t know how much she understands.

I am her primary carer so I don’t get much of a break.

Our daughter is living with her boyfriend so I can’t involve her. I now feel so sad about the whole thing.

AISLE DEAL WITH IT

I love my husband, even though he cheats and ridicules me in public

My friend just takes and takes – how do I tell him 'no'?

THANK YOU

You helped me deal with my sexual abuse and depression

DEIDRE SAYS: That is so tough.

Dementia is one of the cruellest diseases because the person you fell in love with is no longer really there but they need a lot of demanding care.

Please don’t feel you must shoulder this alone.

Does your daughter live close enough to be with her mum one day a week?

Dementia UK (dementiauk.org, 0800 888 6678) can help you access all the support you are entitled to.

Its Admiral Nurses will really understand the strain you are under.
