Miss GB’s scandals – from drunken parties to title being stripped after sex

Pageant queens are known for their beauty, poise and grace.

But if you look a bit further than the wide smiles and glitzy tiaras, there’s often more than meets the eye.

At this year’s Miss Great Britain contest, Eden McAllister looked picture perfect as she was crowned by 2020 winner Jen Atkin.

The pair both sported sparkly dresses and smiled for the many photographers at the event.

But they’re probably glad there weren’t as many cameras around at the after party!

The wild night of fun reportedly had “more drama than Love Island” as there were drunken snogs, sobbing contestants and ladies tumbling over in their sky-high heels.

Fabulous caught up with Miss GB 2020 Jen Atkin, who recently split from her husband and came out as bisexual.

The 28-year-old, from Grimsby, admitted she’s had a “wild” year since splitting from her partner.

Clearly enjoying single life, she revealed: “I’m a nightmare. I’ve got myself into a love triangle…

“Let’s hope this year’s beauty queen is better behaved than me.”

While Jen thinks she’s had a cheeky year, she hasn’t caused any major scandals like previous contestants at the pageant.

Over the years, women have been stripped of their titles and booted out of the contest.

Here are the biggest controversies Miss Great Britain has seen over the years…

Danielle Lloyd

English model Danielle Lloyd has been in several scandals during her career.

But one of the most famous ones was when she was stripped of her Miss Great Britain crown.

She was crowned Miss England in 2004, before going on to scoop victory at Miss GB in 2006.

Her victory was short-lived though.

In the same year, she was dethroned for doing a photoshoot with Playboy.

She was also removed from the position after speaking about her relationship with Teddy Sheringham, which she claims only developed after the pageant.

As he was one of the judges of the competition, some complained her appointment wasn’t fair.

Back in 2006, a statement on the Miss Great Britain website said: "Following recent claims in the press and magazines and the publicity given on the Playboy website for their next issue, we have sadly decided to strip Danielle Lloyd of her title as Miss Great Britain 2006 effective immediately.

"We are very sad that this action has been necessary and we wish her the best for the future."

Zara Holland

Zara Holland is another reality TV star to be stripped of her Miss GB title.

After winning the pageant in 2015, she was signed up for a series of Love Island.

The singleton, who was 20 at the time, raised eyebrows by having sex on screen with Alex Bowen.

An official Miss GB statement read: “The feedback we have received from pageant insiders and members of the general public is such that we cannot promote Zara as a positive role model moving forward.

“We wholly understand everyone makes mistakes. But Zara, as an ambassador for Miss Great Britain, simply did not uphold the responsibility expected of the title.”

The decision proved to be controversial though, with some branding the rules “old fashioned”.

At the time, Yorkshire lass Zara responded: “You know when you’re in the moment and it just happens?

“Why couldn’t we have just gone to sleep?”

Shirlena Johnson

Another familiar face to be axed from Miss GB is X Factor star Shirlena.

The singer famously sung a quirky rendition of Duffy Song Mercy in 2010, before being pulled from the ITV show over “concerns for her mental health”.

Sadly for Shirlena, her pageant career was also cut short.

She was no longer to compete due to rules on age, which became a problem when judges found out she was over 30.

Miss Great Britain chief executive Liz Fuller said: “We have a vigorous interview policy to assess our girls. We didn't doubt her mental ability at all. Shirlena is really determined.

"She was a delight, she doesn't give up. We've had girls who have come second in heats who we never see again, but Shirlena was determined to win, she kept coming back!

"She came to three heats even though she never even made the top five. She's strong, ambitious and astute. It's a shame to lose her, though she did apologise."
