Could the trend of matching your look to your dog’s really become fashionable in an ironic, chic kind of way? The High Street hopes so. Following the lead of luxury labels Louis Vuitton, Versace, Ralph Lauren and Gucci, stores from Barbour to Joules and Next have dog-and-owner looks.
Even LK Bennett has a fetching houndstooth wool-blend dog coat to match its elegant dress in a similar pattern.

Once, I would have scoffed, but now I have my own doted-upon pooch, I see the attraction.
My cavapoochon Pixie and I decide to brave Next’s matching cream cable-knit sweaters. The consensus among pet owners is if they don’t like it, don’t force it. But far from Pixie clawing at the fabric, I detect a supermodel spring in her step.

We venture to the coffee shop in the Oxfordshire village where I live, passing some middle-aged dads who smirk at us. A disapproving older lady, with black labradors and dog-hair-coated gilet, mutters ‘they are not playthings’ to her companion. But the friend I meet for coffee loves our outfits so much she starts looking online for similar styles.
Back home, my children think it’s tragic. But then they think that about everything. So you could say the reaction is mixed.

Of course, you need to be able to wear something you feel comfortable in to pull this off with your pooch. The knitted sweaters and Joules striped tees, for example, are much more my thing than the flashy logos and streetwear hoodies of Hugo Boss. For Pixie, the clothes add a welcome extra layer of warmth. For me they provide — I admit it — a hit of happiness. And we all need a shot of that right now.
