Taylor Swift and Katy Perry are friends again.
The music video for Swift’s new song, “You Need to Calm Down,” off her new album premiered earlier this week and featured Swift and Perry dressed as french fries and a hamburger signaling that the two have put their feud behind them. So, how did Swift know she and Perry were going to be friends again? Find out ahead.
The moment Taylor Swift knew she and Katy Perry would become friends again
In an interview with BBC Radio 1, Swift talked about the state of her relationship with the “Chained to the Rhythm” singer.
She explained that she and Perry had been on “good terms” since Perry extended her a literal olive branch and an apology.
But, as Swift recalled, it wasn’t until they hung out at a party that Swift knew they were back to being friends.
“When we saw each other, it was just very clear to both of us that everything was different, that we had grown up, and that we had grown past allowing ourselves to be pitted against each other, and it just was very, very clear that we remembered how much we had in common,” Swift said in the radio interview.
The 29-year-old admitted that she wasn’t sure if she or Perry were going to let the public in on what happened.
“So, both of us have been in a really good place for a while, but I don’t think either of us really knew if we were ever going to talk about it publicly,” she said.
Taylor Swift wanted her and Katy Perry to be ‘a symbol of redemption and forgiveness’
Also in the interview, Swift discussed her thought process behind inviting Perry to be in her music video for “You Need to Calm Down,” an LGBTQ anthem.
“When I thought of this concept for the video, and I wrote the treatment, I thought of this idea and I thought, ‘You know what, I’m just going to ask her if she would be interested in this and I would totally be fine if she’d rather keep it private and keep it between us,’” Swift explained.
Perry obviously said ‘yes’ to Swift’s invitation.
“But I sent it to her and she said, ‘I would love for us to be a symbol of redemption and forgiveness.’ And, I feel the same way about it.”
Why were Taylor Swift and Katy Perry feuding?
The origin of their feud goes back to 2013 when both women were on tour. A back-up dancer for Swift revealed in an interview that they went back to working for Perry.
They described having more time dancing on Perry’s tour as opposed to Swift’s. Plus, the dancer knew Perry well and felt almost like “family” with her.
In 2014, Swift mentioned in an interview that an unnamed pop star had stolen her employees out from under her and tried “sabotaging her tour.”
At that point, it became the widespread belief that Swift had been referring to Perry and that her song “Bad Blood” was about the incident.
Regardless of what happened between the two, they’ve put the past behind them and are in a much better place now.
