The ordeal of living with agonising back pain each day has left me depressed

DEAR DEIDRE: BACK pain means I am unable to walk any distance and the pain is affecting every aspect of my life.

I am taking painkillers most days but they don’t seem to be helping.

I have suffered with this agonising pain for the past decade and do not feel I am getting the help I need from my GP.

I am a woman of 61, living on my own in a ground-floor flat.

I can’t walk very far and am becoming more and more depressed.

From the moment I wake up to the time I go to bed, every day is spent in pain.

Is there anything you can suggest to help me?

DEIDRE SAYS: I am very sorry to hear you are struggling.

Your depression has no doubt been brought on by the pain and your lack of mobility, so talk to your doctor again and tell them how you feel.

In the meantime, you can find guidance on managing the pain from BackCare (backcare.org.uk, 0208 977 5474).

My support pack Defeat Depression will help you too.
